Why do Blondes and Highlights sometimes turn
ashy, dull or chalky?

When it comes to Blondes – natural or chemically processed – and highlights, the kind of problems that occur are usually brassiness, ashiness, chalky or dusty tones and green tints. When these problems occur, the colorist is forced to take additional steps to "fix" the problem by double processing, reprocessing the ends or processing for a longer time.

In addition, bleached hair can become dry and brittle with split ends and breakage. Repeated processing can cause significant irritation to the scalp as well. You may even see foils that swell or smoke from metals deposited on the hair.

None of this means that going blonde or adding highlights ever has to be a problem.

The main reason for all of the problems associated with blonding and highlighting is the coating of mineral deposits and chlorine from tap water added to the oxidizing chemicals required to bleach out the original color. To avoid problems, you simply have to remove the mineral coating (demineralize the hair) and neutralize the chlorine, which will allow for shorter processing time. Then, stop the oxidation from the bleaching process as soon as the correct level of color removal has been reached.

You are literally coating your hair in dissolved minerals and chlorine every time you shampoo. Both you and your colorist need to understand the effect these minerals and oxidizers have on color processing. Once you do, the problems will disappear and you will get natural, pliable, flowing, brilliant blondes and highlights.

Total Oxidation Management (T.O.M.) for processed and natural blondes and highlights means a regular regimen of gently and thoroughly removing mineral buildup and oxidizers to keep hair cleaner, and create that fresh, well-prepared pallette for color application. Condition: Hard Water

Over 85% of the population in the U.S., according to the Water Quality Association, are bathing with hard water. While hard water is fine for drinking, it can cause many problems for your hair, scalp and skin.

These problems include:

• Hair feels dry

• Hair is resistant to color or perming

• Dandruff or eczema of the scalp

• Dry, flaky skin

• Thinning hair

• Colors fading too quickly

• Perms appearing to fall out

• Discoloration or darkening of hair

HOW YOUR WATER AFFECTS YOUR HAIR

The water you use to wash your hair, scalp, and skin comes from one of two sources:

• Ground Water

• Surface Water

Ground Water

If your water comes from the ground, it is either from your own well or from the local treatment plant that derives the water from wells pumping water from the ground. The source of ground water is from rain passing through aquifers, which are layers of minerals. The acidity (pH below 7) of the rain increases the dissolving effect of minerals. These dissolved solids are found in the water when pumped above the ground and used to bathe.

Surface Water

If your water comes from the treatment plant which derives the water from a surface source, the water is coming from either a river or a lake. Surface water usually contains less minerals because the water has not filtered down through the mineral layers. However, increasing populations are polluting the water causing additional bacteria growth. As a result, the treatment plants must add more chlorine to kill bacteria and then add lime (a calcium compound) to help control the chlorine levels.

Water hardness is determined by the level of calcium that is in the water either found naturally from the ground or put into the water by the treatment plant.

While calcium is the element that determines hardness of water, there are many other elements in the water that effect the texture, volume, shine, control and health of hair.

Our hair, scalp and skin have an electrical charge and that charge is negative. Minerals and oxidizers are charged positive. When a positively charged mineral comes in contact with our hair, scalp, or skin, it attaches on like a magnet.

How do hard water minerals and chlorine effect hair?

Calcium - If your source for water is a well, then more than likely you have calcium in your water. If your source for water is coming from a treatment plant, calcium may have been added to your water. Calcium is the mineral that determines hardness of water.

How calcium effects hair:

• Calcium leaves the hair feeling dry and weighted down. It can even cause a perm to appear relaxed.

• Calcium builds up on the scalp causing flaking of the scalp, giving the appearance of dandruff.

• Calcium can choke the hair at the mouth of the follicle causing the hair to break off, then coating the scalp, blocking further new hair growth.

Iron - Iron is found in ground water from domestic wells and wells used by treatment plants as the source for local water.

How iron effects hair:

• Iron leaves the hair feeling dry, brittle and weighted down.

• Iron can cause dark hair to tint darker and blonde hair to turn orange.

• Iron can block perms and color from properly processing.

Copper - Copper originates in water in three ways:

1. It comes from the ground and is pumped into the water from a well.

2. Particles of copper can come from copper piping. The corrosion caused by hard water lifts the copper particles off the pipes and deposits them into the water.

3. Copper sulfates are added to swimming pools to control the growth of algae. Copper is often added to lakes (that are a source of drinking water) in the summer to kill algae.

Diversion, is a widespread problem of professional salon products being sold in unauthorized locations, such as drug and grocery stores, on-line, and discount sites. These products are easily recognized, as their labels state "Genuine products guaranteed only in salons"

or the like. Although these products my seem like bargains, we urge you to avoid them, since they cannot be guaranteed to perform as tested.

Furthermore, any counterfeit or contaminated products could cause skin irritation, or even infection. Is the possible risk really worth it? We believe that it is not.

PLEASE do not but any such products, even though they may seem to be "a good deal". It is only when bought through a professional salon that the products' quality and performance are backed and ensured by the manufacturer.

Well today is the first day we at Auburn are going to write in our blog, yippee.We have come up with 8 points for a successful Haircut Consultation.

1. It is important that if for any reason you (the consumer) feel that you are not being understood or uncomfortable for any reason, ask for another stylist.

2. Let your stylist know how frequently you get your haircut and when the last your haircut was.

3. What Length do you want your hair to be?

How much is an INCH? If you ask several different people you, you will hear several different answers. We keep a couple of rulers in the shop for reference so that everyone is on the same page about how much hair will be cut

4. Length equals weight.

If you want your hair to feel lighter you will either need shorter hair or layers.

5. Lets us know what you like & don't like about your hair.

Do you like a choppy, messy look or very clean angles. Do you like to put your hair behind you ears? Do you want a blunt or jagged fringe. A good stylist can get you there, but will also let you know if you hair type or life style is not well suited for a particular style, and then come up with some other options.

6. Let us know how you REALLY style your hair.

Your cut should be the foundation for how you style your hair everyday, not just how it gets styled at the salon.

7. Your hobbies & job are important components to a haircut.

There IS a way to find a good balance between a hairstyle you love and you life style. For example, if you are a runner and like to wear your hair in a ponytail, your hair needs to remain long enough to put in a ponytail.

8. If for any reason you feel that you are not being heard or if you feel uncomfortable for any reason, ask for another stylist.
